Sunrise, Twilight, Midnight
It all started at Twilight.
My family's home in Alajuelita has a big yard (something I've always been grateful for). And like any child growing up, I loved to climb trees.
There's one specific Mango tree at the end of the yard that was perfect for climbing, and once above the first branch you can see a beautiful view of the Alajuelita church, and the mountains and cities behind it. I used to come home from school, and climb the tree at twilight. It's my absolute favorite time of day, because the sun is gone but you can still see the mountains, the lights start to turn on, and for some reason I've always find it magical. The cold air, the stillness, the end of another day.
The solitude and peace I find in this time, and the magic, still fascinate me to this day, And of course, once again, emotions spilling out. What work of mine would be complete without tears?
That being said, when I decided to paint this first one, it was out of an experiment. I had found this frame in Barrio Chino, and I realized I could fill it up with... tears? Make them sound. Make them something you could play with. It's one of my favorite things I've done.
After that, came the poem. The idea of "times of day where I find magic", or stillness and peace.
there’s quiet,
but is not an ugly silence,
more of an anticipation
illuminated and enlighted
At twilight the magic wind blows,
the north star shyly peaks,
sight lost in the broken colors
guiding and calling,
whispering decisions to my ear
At midnight the moon shines brightly
without shame or mercy,
illuminating the last corner of my heart,
emotions spilling out of my dreams,
do you see me?...
